How to Separate Colors in Cricut Design Space Using SVG Files: A Step-by-Step Guide

More information on this Design

If you have just purchased one of our digital design bundles, you might be wondering how to easily customize it for your next DIY craft project. One of the biggest advantages of using SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) over PNG is its ability to be separated into individual layers and colors!

Whether you want to change colors or rearrange elements, this quick tutorial will show you exactly how to split and manage layers in Cricut Design Space.

🛠️ What You Need:

  1. Any premium SVG file from our shop.

  2. A computer or tablet with Cricut Design Space installed.

🎬 Step 1: Upload and Insert Your SVG File

  1. Open Cricut Design Space and start a New Project.

  2. Click the Upload button on the left panel, find your downloaded SVG file, and save it to your library.

  3. Select the image from your uploaded library and click Add to Canvas.

💡 Note: Unlike PNG files which import as a single flat image, SVG files automatically retain their individual cutting layers!

🧩 Step 2: How to "Ungroup" Elements

When you first drop the SVG onto your canvas, all the elements are grouped together as one cohesive design. To move or edit them separately:

  1. Click on the design to select it.

  2. Go to the top of the Layers Panel (on the right-side of your screen).

  3. Click the Ungroup icon.

Now, you can click on individual parts of the design (like text, floral elements, or backgrounds) and move them independently!

🎨 Step 3: Changing and Syncing Colors

Want to change a specific color to match your vinyl or sublimation paper?

  1. Click on the specific layer you want to change.

  2. Click the Operation Color Box (the small colored square next to the "Operation" dropdown menu at the top).

  3. Select your new desired color.

🧲 Step 4: Using "Attach" to Keep Things in Place

Before you click "Make It", there is one crucial step. If you want specific pieces of the same color to stay in their exact positions when cutting:

  1. Hold the Shift key and select all the layers that share the same color.

  2. Look at the bottom of the Layers Panel and click Attach.

This ensures that Cricut won't scramble your design elements across the cutting mat to save space, keeping your alignment absolutely perfect!
